The Local Area
Five miles off Great Abaco Island, Man O War Cay is a favorite stop for visiting yachtsmen, having one of the safest and best-protected harbours in the world. The island also offers several white sandy beaches, a coral reef to explore, and nearby fishing and diving.
The settlement has about three hundred native residents, descendants of loyalists who settled in Abaco after the American Revolution. They are friendly, honest, and hardworking people. The economy of the island is centered on boat building and the many seasonal residents who have homes here. There is one grocery store, two restaurants, a hardware and building materials company, two full service boatyards, a full service marina with dive shop, and a number of gift boutiques. Life on the island is laid-back and easy going with none of the bustle and glitter often found in resort areas.
Nearby there is Great Guana Cay that offers several restaurants, a golf course, incredible beaches and both snorkeling and diving, and Elbow Cay which has a vibrant settlement and several restaurants, and is home to the Hope Town lighthouse.
Our family has been a part of the Man O War community since the late 1940’s. We believe it to be a very special place. We are happy to answer any questions you have about Arawak House and about the area.
